How much does a contractor bond cost in Georgia?

The State Board for Residential and General Contractors requires contractors to post a $25,000 surety bond as part of the licensing process to operate in the state. Some cities and counties in the State of Georgia require their own specific surety bonds. Below are the required bond amounts for popular local bonds:

  • City of Valdosta Contractor Bond: $2,000
  • Cobb County Code Compliance Bond: $10,000
  • Columbia County Commercial General Contractor Bond: $20,000
  • Performance Bond for Water Well Contractors and Drillers: $20,000

The surety company issuing the bond determines your premium rate, which is the percentage of the total bond amount you pay as the premium. During the application process, the surety company evaluates your personal credit, financial statements, industry experience, and licensing history. EZ Surety can issue premiums for Georgia contractor license bonds for as low as $100 for applicants with standard credit. If your credit is below average, we can still offer a competitive rate for your contractors license bond.

Why are contractor bonds important in Georgia?

The State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors requires surety bonds to hold licensed contractors accountable for the quality of their work. The bonds protect the public (sometimes a city/county) from damages incurred due to the contractor’s violation of licensing laws or unsatisfactory work.

When the surety company issues the bond, they provide a financial guarantee to the state that the contractor will comply with all building codes and regulations while maintaining ethical business practices. If the contractor violates these regulations, causing a loss to the consumer, the consumer can file a claim against the bond. If the claim is valid, the surety company will cover the costs to repair the damage or complete the work, up to the amount of the bond.

Georgia contractor license bonds are required for various construction trades including construction or deconstruction of residential and commercial buildings, HVAC, electrical work, plumbing, and other specialties.

How do I get my general contractor’s license in Georgia?

To conduct business as a general contractor in the state of Georgia, you need a Georgia General Contractor License. This license can be either commercial or residential.

  • A commercial Georgia General Contractor License will allow you to bid on and complete projects that are worth $50,000 or more that involve working on properties that are not single-family residences.
  • A residential Georgia General Contractor License will allow you to supervise construction activities for single-family residences.

Before applying for the license, you must pass the Georgia Business and Law exam which assesses your knowledge of the Georgia State Building Code before receiving a Georgia commercial or residential general contractor license.

The exam administrator, Prometric, provides a detailed guide on what is required in order to take the exam, and that guide is linked here for your convenience.

After you complete and pass the exam, you can apply for the general contractor license by:

  1. Submitting your application to the state by selecting the appropriate application here (You will need three written references to submit with your application).
  2. Pay the $100 application fee
  3. Submit your exam score.
  4. Provide proof of a fully executed $10,000 Contractors Bond with us
  5. Provide requested financial statements.
